Another very common question that my customers often ask and similar to styling a sofa, I don’t think there is a right and wrong answer. It all comes down to personal preference. How do you want to feel when you enter your bedroom? What kind of atmosphere do you want to create?
Once you have those questions answered, then how many cushions on a bed will just flow. So depending on the atmosphere you would like to create, here are some suggestions for a Queen bed.
To create the relaxed and playful atmosphere, I recommend 5 to 7 cushions. Having a cushion combo with different shapes, sizes , patterns and textures will create a more relaxing and playful look. For example, three larger (60x60cm) velvet cushions at the back and then layer it with two smaller squares (45x45cm) and add a small lumbar cushions at the front.

For a formal look, style cushions with symmetry e.g. 4, 6 or 8 cushions. Keeping cushion shapes and sizes similar will give it a more formal look. Velvet cushions can also create a formal atmosphere. For example, two larger (60x60cm) velvet cushions at the back and then layer it with two smaller square cushions (45x45cm) at the front.

Personally, I think the minimum number of cushions on a bed should be three otherwise it looks cold and lonely. For example, have two large (60x60cm) cushions at the back and one smaller one at the front. Keep the colours, patterns and texture to the minimum.

For King size bed, I recommend a minimum of 5 cushion, 7 will look beautiful! As for single beds, layer three cushions will definitely elevates the room e.g. one 60x60cm at the back, then one 45x45cm and a small lumbar of 30x50cm. Remember, styling is all about having fun, so don’t be afraid to try and test your cushion combo out.
