How to Pick the Right Outdoor Cushion
Consider these three factors when shopping for outdoor cushions:
Type of Fabric
A general rule for choosing cushion covers is to opt for fabrics that can hold up to the stress of being sat upon or squeezed. Make sure the fabric is thick, tough and durable.
Here at Willow Home & Living, our cushion covers are made out of merino wool, which is the least likely fabric to pill. This tightly woven cloth has a much softer and luxurious feel than other wool types, so you get durable yet cosy cushion covers.
Apart from being pilling-resistant, outdoor cushion covers should also be water-repellent. Otherwise, they’ll be prone to developing mold and mildew. Fade-resistance is another important factor. The cushions will likely be exposed to the sun for prolonged periods, risking fabric discolouration. You want a material that can withstand long hours under the sun and multiple washes and still look brand new.
Apart from our thick yet soft linen-blend fabric, here are some cushion cover fabrics that are ideal for outdoor use:
- Polypropylene Fabric
- Sunbrella Fabric or Solution-Dyed Acrylic
Filling or Padding
The covers should fit snugly over the padding, all the way to the corners, to make your cushions look plump and inviting. Otherwise, your cushions would look flat and cheap and won’t achieve the look you want for your outdoor space. To make sure you’ve got a good fit, use a cushion insert that’s slightly bigger than the cover.
Of course, you want a filling material that’s soft and flexible to provide a comfortable outdoor seating arrangement. However, the padding should be able to bounce back to its original shape even after being squashed multiple times. This way, you can reuse the cushion for years and just change the covers when you want to refresh the look of your outdoor living space.
Here are the most popular filling options for outdoor cushions:
- Polyurethane Foam
- Clustered Polyfill
Your choice of colour isn’t just important in terms of aesthetics, but it also affects the fade-resistance of your covers. Dark colours and bright, vibrant shades are more prone to fading compared to light hues. We suggest going for pastel-coloured covers for your outdoor cushions. If you’re keen on choosing dark tones, make sure you keep them under the shade and away from direct sunlight.
