How to Measure for Replacement Cushions

If you’re ordering replacement cushions for outdoor furniture, your existing ones are probably not in their original condition. Over time, the fabric stretches and loses its shape, making it difficult to get an accurate measurement. Since your existing cushions aren’t accurate anymore, you need to measure the furniture where the cushions will go and not the old cushions. This way, you’ll get a better fit and end up with a better looking piece of outdoor furniture.

How to Measure for Replacement Couch Cushions

Measuring for any long, rectangular replacement cushions for your outdoor furniture requires the same process. If you’re ordering custom cushions for a window seat, bench, or lounge, follow the same steps listed below for a couch.

Step 1: Measure the length

The length is the longest part of the cushion. Measure the seat where the cushion will go along the longest side. Round the measurement off to the nearest 5mm.

Step 2: Measure the width

Measure the width, or the shortest part of the seat in millimetres, also rounding off to the nearest 5mm.

Step 3: Decide on the thickness

You might want the replacement cushions to be the same thickness, thicker, or thinner than the existing cushion depending on how comfortable it was. On average, cushions range from 50 mm to 100 mm in thickness.

Step 4: Measure the backrest

Measuring the furniture for the backrest is similar to measuring the seat except that you must take the thickness of the seat cushion in mind. Measure the width of the backrest from the top to the bottom where it will meet the height of the seat cushion. Also, take the additional 30mm thickness caused by the Dacron wrap into consideration. Subtract the 30mm from the total width of the backrest.

Measuring for Replacement Cushions for a Sun Lounge

The cushion on a sun lounge is usually one continuous piece with an area that separates the “head” from the rest of the cushion.

Step 1: Measure the width of the furniture in millimetres

Step 2: Measure the length of the head of the furniture in millimetres from the top to the area which folds.

Step 3: Decide how thick you want the cushion to be. The average thickness for sun lounges is 50 mm.

Step 4: Measure the length of the long section of the furniture in millimetres, rounding to the nearest 5mm.

How to Measure for Replacement Cushions for Your Chairs

Measuring for chair cushions is the same as measuring for replacement couch cushions. Measure the width and length of the chair seat and backrest, rounding the measurement to the nearest 5mm. When measuring the chair backrest, measure from the top edge to the top of where the cushion for the chair seat will rest. Like most other replacement cushions for outdoor furniture, those for chairs are usually 50mm thick.

Measuring for Replacement Bolster Pillows

Bolster pillows are different from other types of outdoor cushions because of their long, cylindrical shape. When measuring for replacement bolster pillows, start by measuring the long length from seam to seam and round to the nearest 5mm. Next, measure the width from seam to seam, also rounded to the nearest 5mm. This is the diameter of the cushion.

Measuring Custom Shaped Cushions

Step 1: Follow the same measuring process as you did for the other replacement pillows. Begin by measuring the longest part of the cushion and rounding the measurement off to the nearest 5mm.

Step 2: Measure the widest part of the cushion.

Step 3: Measure the thickness you want for your new cushion.
